Let’s face it: none of us are the same people we were before the pandemic hit. The same can be said for our careers. You may still be employed, but doing your day-to-day work in a very different manner. Or, you may have temporarily or permanently lost your position and are figuring out your next move.
COVID-19 has given some of us the time (a lot of time!) to take a step back and reassess our jobs and our careers. It is possible to seek sustainable employment while exploring what you want out of your career.
You may be asking yourself questions like: Who am I at this time in my life? What do I want to contribute to the world? What do I love to do? What are my skills and strengths? How can I use them to make a living and share them with others?
One of the positive effects of the pandemic is the number of high-quality, free online resources that have been made available for job hunters and career changers. These webinars and workshops focus on the emotional, as well as practical, components of job search and career exploration. For example, the University of California - Davis has posted a webinar series titled “How to Manage Your Career in Times of Change.” The Penn Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) Alumni Association offers a “Strategies to Thrive” webinar series.
As Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “At the center of your being, you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.” Take this time to listen.
